A safe and healthy working environment is promoted through the implementation of a health and safety management system. A health and safety management system is a process that an employer puts in place to minimize the occurrence of illness and injury in the workplace. Through the assessment and identification of workplace hazards, the implementation of a health and safety management system is accomplished.
Risk control in all workplace operations is then also able to take place. It is important to note that the complexity and scope of a health and safety management system may vary depending on the nature of work performed, as well as the type of workplace it is being performed in. The spectrum of staff related risks in the workplace are managed. This will enable your organisation to control insurance costs and most likely lead to an increase in performance from its existing operations.

Employer Health and Safety Policy and Management Commitment
This written policy comprises the following:
- The employer’s commitment to health and safety;
- Health and safety responsibilities of workers, management, contractors, and visitors; and
- The overall objectives and goals of the program.
It is of great importance to remember that the CEO/senior operating manager for the workplace should date and sign the policy.
Identification and Analysis of Health and Safety Hazards @ work
In order to identify and analyse potential harmful sources to workers, a complete evaluation of all work areas, machinery, work processes and equipment needs to be done. A record of all hazards, including the level of potential exposure to workers and the degree of risk, should be stored in a place of safekeeping.
Control Measures to eliminate/reduce Risks from Identified Hazards
Each hazard identified should have control measures developed specifically for it. Records of safe work practices and procedures for hazardous operations should be available at all times. All workers should also be trained accordingly. Administrative, engineering and personal protective equipment are some typical control methods.
Worker Competency and Training
- An essential component of an effective health and safety management system is worker competency and training;
- It is important that workers know how to do their jobs safely and without risk to their health;
- Effectiveness of training needs to be measured. Training and worker competency should be documented; and
- Special consideration should be given to new/young workers. Critical information must be covered on the first day and orientation of new workers should be completed within the first week on the job.
Inspection Program
- A regular inspection program is important in ensuring that risk control measures are in place and effectively protecting workers;
- In order to identify potential hazards and gain important information about it, inspection tours are crucial; and
- Records of all inspections should be kept on file.
