What are Environmental Management Policies and procedures?

Environmental Management Policies and Procedures can be described as gate-keepers used by organisations worldwide to address the use of energy, raw materials, water and waste, as well as to prevent and limit environmental accidents. Issues related to mineral, energy and groundwater resources, land use, geological hazards, and protecting the environment, both onshore and offshore, are also affected by it.

Policies and Procedures relating to Environmental Management:

  • Organisations should provide only goods and services that cause as little damage as possible. Also, the goods and services provided should not adversely affect the health and safety of personnel either inside or outside their sites;
  • All organisations should comply with the relevant environmental legislation and approved codes of practice. Thus, they should co-operate fully with the appropriate regulatory authorities and also establish close links with environmental agencies to promote an interchange of information on good environmental practice;
  • Organisations should aim to keep their land, buildings, plant, and equipment maintained as efficiently as is possible. All new buildings should subsequently be designed in such a way to blend in with the surrounding environment;
  • Organisations should promote an understanding of environmental issues that arises from their business activities among their employees, suppliers, contractors, customers, and the local community;
  • Organisations should maintain an Environmental Management System (EMS) throughout all its sites. The above system should address matters relating to the use of energy, raw materials, water and waste. Environmental accidents and pollution will be limited and even prevented through the use of an Environmental Management System;
  • Organisations should assess the different environmental effects of its products and operations. This is done with the aim of controlling and reducing environmental impacts to a minimum. Continuous monitoring with the aim of improving environmental performance is of the utmost importance;
  • Organisations should appoint an EMS Committee who is responsible for strategic environmental matters, which includes the Environmental Policy;
  • An organisation’s EMS Committee should set out environmental targets for all relevant activities. They should also conduct regular environmental audits concerning all aspects of an organisation’s activities; and
  • All organisations should obtain certification to ISO 14001, the Environmental Management Standard.
